That is why, at Clínica Dental Fernando Soria, our dental clinic in the Salamanca district, we offer our DENTAL EMERGENCY SERVICE to our patients and to anyone who needs it.
.
To provide the right solution for each dental emergency, it is very important for patients to be able to recognize which complaints are considered dental emergencies.
Injuries and fractures of the crown or root, soft tissue inflammation and infections are dental emergencies that need prompt attention.
“Although they are hard to bear when they occur, it is important to make clear that in most cases dental emergencies are not life-threatening, with a few exceptions, such as a large abscess that carries the risk of filling the neck with pus and blocking the airway in less than two hours, or a jaw fracture caused by an accident,” explains Dr. Fernando Soria, clinical director of our dental clinic in the Salamanca district.
Even though they are not considered life-threatening, dental emergencies need to be treated immediately, because they are warning us of a condition or disease that can get worse and have negative consequences for our oral health.
Of all the causes that can lead to a dental emergency, the most common are the following:
Infections: infection caused by tooth decay accounts for the highest percentage of emergency visits to a dental clinic. This infection occurs because the decay has been left untreated for a long time and has reached the nerve of the tooth, which causes unbearable pain.
Less frequently, periodontal disease (pyorrhea, gum inflammation or bleeding) can lead to a dental emergency. Tartar buildup on the gums causes not only inflammation and bleeding, but also infection. The pain of periodontal disease brings severe discomfort, caused by the exposed tooth root and by loose teeth.
Pericoronitis is the pain and inflammation that occurs when the gum covers third molars (wisdom teeth) that are about to come in or have only partially erupted. Because these molars are in a spot that is hard to reach for proper cleaning, they sometimes become infected due to the buildup of bacteria and food debris.
In children, as their baby teeth are replaced by permanent ones, pericoronitis is quite common, because sometimes the tooth that is coming in has trouble breaking through the gum and stays covered by it. This makes hygiene harder for the child and makes infection more likely, and it is also quite painful, warns Dr. Fernando Soria, a specialist in Advanced Periodontics.
Bruxism: excessive clenching of the teeth causes pain in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), which brings severe jaw pain, headaches and, in very acute cases, a significant reduction in how wide the mouth can open. Many patients mistake this sharp pain for pain caused by an infection or a cavity.
Post-treatment pain: these emergencies arise for various reasons, for example after tooth extractions, some type of surgery for periodontal disease or a root canal.
Alveolitis is the inflammation of the alveolus, the socket the tooth sits in. It causes very sharp pain that needs immediate attention.
Trauma: an accident involving a violent impact can cause a fracture, crack, displacement or detachment of the tooth and of the structures that support it: the gums and bone.
This is a very common dental emergency in young children. In adults, the tooth can be reimplanted, provided it has been kept in suitable conditions.

At our dental clinic in the Salamanca district, Clínica Dental Fernando Soria, we have developed a specific protocol for dental emergencies.
Identifying the emergency
◗ When we receive a call about a dental emergency, it is very important to go through a detailed questionnaire to identify what type of emergency it is and provide the right solution.
Scheduling the appointment
◗ In many cases, we can resolve the emergency over the phone, by giving the right hygiene guidelines or sending prescriptions for medication to reduce the pain and stop the infection, so that it can then be treated in person.
◗ In other cases, when the patient needs to be seen in person, we will give the emergency appointment priority in our schedule.
◗ Our whole team will get ready to receive the patient.
