YOUR PERIODONTISTS IN MADRID

Everything that periodontal disease entails is disheartening. My team and I have been offering periodontal care in Madrid for years and, over that time, we have witnessed the collapse of many people’s oral health due to the quiet but unstoppable undermining work of gingival bacteria.

Despite the terrible consequences of periodontal disease, its causes are easy to tackle with a proper dental hygiene routine, which is why we dentists place so much emphasis on it and on preventive measures, the cheapest and easiest ways to fight gum disease.

Our periodontists not only treat early-stage cases but also take on the most serious problems of gum disease, always providing a solution for each patient’s needs.

We will help you stop and reverse the damage caused by periodontal disease. We will teach you everything you need so that it becomes a distant, bad memory.

What is periodontics?

Periodontics is the specialty within dentistry that deals with the diseases affecting the gums and the tissues that support the teeth, also known as periodontal diseases.

The functions of periodontics when it comes to gum disease are to anticipate (prevention), detect (diagnosis) and act (periodontal treatments). Periodontists aim to correct all the pathological, aesthetic and functional abnormalities your gums may suffer from.

The central cause of these conditions is tartar: a calcified substance formed by the mineralization of the bacterial plaque that coats the teeth above and below the gum line, causing infectious and inflammatory processes that undermine all the tissues it comes into contact with, eventually leading to the loss of teeth and of mandibular and maxillary bone, as well as a wide range of systemic diseases (affecting the whole body).

Our periodontists take periodontal disease very seriously because of its terrible, devastating effects, not only on oral health and aesthetics but also on general well-being.

PERIODONTAL DISEASE: GINGIVITIS AND PERIODONTITIS

We can think of periodontal diseases as a process of oral degeneration with two stages: gingivitis (initial) and periodontitis (final).

PROBLEMS CAUSED BY PERIODONTAL DISEASE

Periodontal disease not only affects oral health but also the general health of the patient.

GINGIVITIS

Gingivitis is the initial phase of periodontal pathology. It is characterized by inflammation and frequent bleeding of the gums.

Tartar has adhered to the enamel and, in most cases, has not yet spread down below the gum line. It is reversible with proper oral hygiene and regular professional dental cleanings.

PERIODONTITIS

Periodontitis is the final phase of periodontal disease. It is also known as pyorrhea. It involves the destruction of the bone that supports the tooth.

The disease, if not treated in time, leads to the loss of teeth.

ORAL HEALTH

Periodontitis considerably worsens the condition of the teeth and the tissues around them. The infectious and inflammatory processes associated with tartar advance through the gums, creating periodontal pockets that, if the disease runs its course, will cause the teeth to fall out and destroy the bone that held them.

GENERAL HEALTH

It has been widely demonstrated that gum disease causes or aggravates systemic conditions such as inflammatory processes (joints, tendons, etc.), bacterial infections, diabetes mellitus (periodontitis and DM interact negatively), obesity problems (obesity aggravates periodontal problems), cardiovascular problems (higher risk of stroke and heart attack), etc. Periodontal disease seriously affects your health.

SYMPTOMS AND DETECTION OF GUM DISEASE

Tackling gum disease in time is essential to stop its harmful effects and reverse them. The later it is detected and treated, the worse the prognosis and the more complex and expensive the treatment, going as far as having to replace all the teeth.

Periodontal symptoms

Gum disease usually presents a set of symptoms that a specialist can easily recognize:

◗ Heavy bleeding from the gums
◗ Receding gums (teeth look longer)
◗ Halitosis (bad breath)
◗ Loose teeth
◗ Tooth sensitivity
◗ Pain when chewing
◗ Soft, inflamed or reddish gums

How is it detected?

Sometimes the disease can progress without any symptoms. During a dental checkup, the dentist looks for signs of periodontal disease, so that disease not yet detected can be treated before it gets worse.

PERIODONTIST IN MADRID: DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT

To minimize the terrible effects of periodontal disease on the patient’s health, not only is an early and accurate diagnosis necessary, but the patient must also receive proper treatment from a specialized periodontist.

We offer you treatment supervised by a specialized periodontist and backed by the best equipment and the highest-quality products.

PERIODONTAL DIAGNOSIS

Through a visual inspection by our specialists and with the technology available in our office we can offer you a safe and effective treatment.

◗ Digital diagnosis (Florida Probe).
◗ Genetic and microbiological analysis.
◗ Digital X-ray examination.
◗ Photographs to monitor the progress of treatment.
◗ Early diagnosis improves the prognosis, since it is essential
to halt its progression as soon as possible.

PERIODONTAL TREATMENT

Basic (non-surgical) treatment for mild stages

◗ Scaling and root planing (cleaning the roots).
◗ Laser treatment for gums.
◗ Reassessment after 30 days

Advanced (surgical) treatment for advanced stages:

When the response to basic treatment is insufficient, we resort to periodontal surgery.

Our goal is to stop the disease and put in place a maintenance treatment plan with regular checkups every 4 to 6 months. Alongside this, education in oral hygiene and health techniques, focused on proper care and cleaning of the mouth, is key to the patient’s complete well-being. Prevention is much better than cure.

PLASTIC SURGERY OF THE GUMS (BEFORE AND AFTER)

Plastic surgery of the gums is one of the treatments most requested by patients with periodontitis, although it goes far beyond periodontal disease. There are two main situations in which we intervene: a lack of gum tissue (receding gums or gingival recession) or excess gum tissue and gum asymmetry.

RECEDING GUMS (GINGIVAL RECESSION)

Gum recession leaves the necks of your teeth and part of the roots exposed, which looks unattractive and makes your teeth very sensitive to cold food and drinks.

This loss of gum tissue can have many causes: age, trauma, incorrect and/or aggressive hygiene techniques or bruxism, but a major cause is periodontal disease, especially at the periodontitis stage.

Before treating receding gums we must address the causes; then we use plastic surgery techniques for the gums known as mucogingival surgery.

The surgical technique we use for receding gums involves connective tissue grafts, usually taken from the palate, to cover all the exposed areas of the teeth and restore the proper contour of the gums, which are a very important part of the smile and of oral aesthetics.

EXCESS GUMS AND GINGIVAL ASYMMETRY

When there is excess gum tissue (a condition called altered passive eruption), the patient shows too much gum when smiling. The surplus gum gives the teeth an unsightly small, short appearance.

The surgical technique used to correct this excess gum tissue, known as gum reshaping, gingival recontouring or crown lengthening, consists of removing the surplus gum with a minimally invasive, painless technique, so that when you smile you only show your teeth, improving the look of your smile.

Gingival recontouring is performed not only for excess gum tissue but also for other reasons, such as gum asymmetry, uneven positioning of the teeth or improper tooth eruption.

PRICE OF PERIODONTAL TREATMENT IN MADRID

Given the complexity and wide variety of periodontal treatments, it is difficult to talk about price ranges.

As for the treatments offered by our periodontists in Madrid, the key is to come to the free checkups and clinical assessments, because something that could otherwise require extensive and complex (expensive) treatment may come to nothing or cost very little.

Prevention is the dentist’s best weapon to deal with periodontal disease.
